The 6 tracks continue the exploration of how lyric & song-writing are perceived in the post-everything era. As the Sunday Times Culture suggests, "The poems aren't sung, yet the pieces are undeniably songlike, first because the music refuses to act simply as background, but lurches frequently, sometimes unexpected to the fore, and second because we hear the meaning of the words in the way we normally pick up song lyrics," while WIRED Magazine calls Eno’s soundscapes, "a tapestry of pillowy synths, minor-key melodies, chiming guitars and skittering drums."

All of these elements come together for the November 7th/8th release of the EP, which was produced by Eno and features his original artwork on vinyl, CD & digital formats.

“It is, frankly, classic Eno.”
BBC Music

“A fascinating, magnetic experiment in sound”
Los Angeles Times

“Striking speaking voices … recite [Rick] Holland’s lines, which express cosmic wonderment and artistic ambition. Then Mr. Eno stretched and tweaked those recordings to bring out quirks in the speakers’ enunciation and tone, and, pushing the songs further into a realm of artificiality, added a glitchy electronic soundtrack.”
New York Times

“Brian Eno’s second album for Warp Records is a gem. Words by poet Rick Holland are set against lush soundscapes and subtle, hazy melodies. Superb.”

BRIAN ENO – ABOUT THE ARTWORK…
“Recently I was in Sao Paulo, the most city-ish city in the Western world. I took lots of pictures of the forest, and then, back in London, started playing with the images in photoshop. As I was playing I was listening to this album ( – in shuffle mode, highly recommended ) and I realised I was crafting the images and the colours to match up with what I was hearing. So that’s how the cover images came about…”

Drums-Between-The-Bells-Hard-Back
Brian Eno first came across the work of Rick Holland in the late 90’s during the Map-Making project; a series of collaborative works between students of the Royal College, the Guildhall School of Music, the Royal Academy of Music, the Royal College of Music, the National Youth Orchestra and the English National Ballet, among others. In 2003, Brian and Rick made their first music together (the resulting work does not appear on this album). In the intervening time since that initial session they have met infrequently to work on new compositions. In early 2011, following the release of ‘Small Craft on a Milk Sea’ (Brian’s debut album for Warp Records), the pair resolved to finish the project. Drums Between the Bells is the result.
